WOOTTON, a parish in the hundred of WOOTTON, county of OXFORD, 2 miles (N. by W.) from Woodstock, containing 1084 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Oxford, rated in the king's books at £15. 2. 8., and in the patronage of the Warden and Fellows of New College, Oxford. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is partly in the Norman style, but principally of later date. A court leet is annually held, at which constables and other officers are appointed. At Old Woodstock, and in other parts of the parish, the manufacture of gloves is carried on. Charles Parrott, in 1785, bequeathed £2300 India annuities, now producing about £70 per annum, for the maintenance, education, and apprenticing of twelve boys. Numerous vestiges of Roman occupation have been discovered at various times; on Chaldon hill are the remains of an exploratory camp, near which passes the old Roman road, Akeman-street.
