WYTHBURN, a chapelry, joint with St. John's Castlerigg, in that part of the parish of CROSTHWAITE which is in ALLERDALE ward below Darwent, county of CUMBERLAND, 8 miles (S. E. by S.) from Keswick. The population is returned with St. John's Castlerigg, under which also the account of the living is given. The boundaries of the counties of Cumberland and Westmorland are here marked by " Dunmaile-Raise Stones," which are said to commemorate the defeat of the last king of Cumberland, by Edmund, the Saxon monarch, of whom Malcolm, King of Scotland, held Cumberland in fee. Thirlemere lake is within this chapelry.
