INNISBOFFIN, or INCIIBOFIN, an island in
Lough Ree, in the parish of NOGHEVAL, barony of
KILKENNY-WEST, county of WESTMEATH, and province
of LEINSTER; containing 27 acres of arable land: the
population is returned with the parish. An abbey was
founded here in the early part of the sixth century by
St. Rioeh, nephew of St. Patrick, which was burnt In
770, pillaged several times in the eleventh century, and
destroyed by the Danes in 1089.
