ELGAR, an isle, in the parish of Shapinshay, county
of Orkney. This place, also called Eller-Holm, lies a
little southward of the island of Shapinshay, from which
it is separated by a reef of rocks that are almost dry at
low water. It furnishes pasture for a number of sheep
and young cattle in summer, and by its favourable situation
gives the utmost security to the fine harbour of
Elwick. There are evident marks of its having been
formerly inhabited, though at present no one resides
upon it.
