JOPPA, a village, in the parish of Coylton, district of Kyle, county of Ayr, S^ miles (S. E. by E.) from Ayr; containing 168 inhabitants. It is situated on the road from Ayr to Coylton, a short distance westward of the Coyl water, and is regarded as the principal village in the parish, the others being chiefly groups of cottages. There is a Sabbath school here; also a private school, attended by about fifty children, and the teacher of which has a rent-free schoolroom.
