JOPPA, a village, in that part of the parish of DudDiNGSTON,
county of Edinburgh, which formed the
quoad sacra parish of Portobello, ^ a mile (E. S. E.)
from Portobello; containing 2*5 inhabitants. This is a
modern and neat village, situated on the sea-side, and
on the road between Edinburgh and Musselburgh. The
North-British railway passes by. Joppa may be said to
form a suburb of the large and fashionable village of
Portobello, which, on account of its excellent beach
and its proximity to Edinburgh, is visited as a bathingplace
in the summer season. In the vicinity are some
handsome villas.
