MILTON, a hamlet, in the parish of St-Cyrus, county of Kincardine, 65 miles (N. N. E.) from Montrose; containing 34 inhabitants. It is situated on the coast, and is a small fishing-place, consisting of a group of cottages. The former village of Milton of Mathers was built on an ancient shingle beach protected by a projecting ledge of limestone rock; this rock was quarried for lime to such an extent that the sea broke through in 1795, carried away the village in one night, and penetrated 150 yards inward, where it has maintained itself ever since. The present hamlet was built further inward, on the new shore. The lime-works In this neighbourhood were discontinued about 1836.
