MUGDRUM, an isle, in the parish of Abernethy,
county of Perth. It lies in the river Tay, a short distance
from, and nearly opposite to, the town of Newburgh;
and is about a mile in length, and 200 yards in
breadth. The island is surrounded by a high embankment,
the level surface being considerably lower than
that of the tide at high water. The new house and woods
of Mugdrum are prominent on the south shore of the
Tay, in Fifeshire; the old house and bank overhang the
river. Mugdrum was formerly much infested with rats,
which were exterminated by a breed of wild cats; and
some of these latter animals are still on it, resisting all
attempts to be domesticated.
