NEWTOWN, a village, in the parish of Melrose and district of Melrose, county of Roxburgh, 3 miles (S. E.) from the town of Melrose; containing 164 inhabitants. This village is beautifully situated in the south-eastern part of the parish, in the romantic dell through which the river Bowden flows into the Tweed. There is a place of worship for a congregation of the United Presbyterian Church; and a school-house has been erected for the instruction of poor children.
