TOLLCROSS, a village, in the former quoad sacra parish of Shettleston, parish of Barony, suburbs of the city of Glasgow, and county of Lanark, 2 miles (E. by S.) from Glasgow; containing I767 inhabitants. This populous and prosperous village owes its origin to the establishment of the Clyde iron-works, in the immediate vicinity; at which, and also in the neighbouring collieries, its population for the most part is employed. Some of the inhabitants are engaged in other manufactures of the district, principally hand-loom weaving. The road from Holytown to Glasgow passes through. Tollcross House, the property of the Misses Dunlop, is a handsome mansion, built about the middle of the seventeenth century, and subsequently enlarged and improved.
