TORRANCE, a village, in the parish of Campsie, county of Stirling, 2 miles (W.) from Kirkintilloch; containing 473 inhabitants. This village is situated in the southern extremity of the parish, and on the northern boundary of the parish of Cadder, or Calder, in Lanarkshire. The estate of Torrance once belonged to the Harailtons, cadets of the illustrious family of that name; it was afterwards sold to the Stuarts, of Castlemilk. The village stands on the high road from Lennoxtown to Calder, and a large portion of the population is engaged in the various branches of manufacture connected with the district. One of the parochial schools is situated here; and divine service is performed in the schoolroom on Sunday evenings, the church of Campsie being about five miles distant. The present population in the village, and around it, is stated to be about eight hundred.
