MAENAN, a township, in the parish of Eglwys-Bach, union of LLANRWST, hundred of LLECHWEDD-ISAV, county of CARNARVON, NORTH WALES, 2+ miles (N.) from Llanrwst; containing, with part of the extra-parochial district of Maenan- Abbey, 456 inhabitants. It is situated on the right bank of the river Conway, and forms for the most part an ancient lordship, for which oourts leet and baron are still annually held in April, by the steward of Sir W. W. Wynne, Bart: this lordship comprises the whole township, excepting only the site of the abbey of Maenan, forming the extra-parochial district above-mentioned, and claims all the privileges formerly possessed by the abbots, namely, exemptions from tithes, &c.
