PENIARTH, a hamlet, in the parish of LLANEGRIN, hundred of TALY-BONT, county of MERIONETH, NORTH WALES, 5 miles (N.N.E.) from Towyn; containing 244 inhabitants. Its name signifies " the head of the Garth," Garth meaning such a mountain ridge as forms a bend or cove, and is derived from its surface being elevated and rugged, forming a part of the Cader Idris chain. It occupies the north-eastern portion of the parish, and on the southeast is bounded by the river Dysyni, on which is a weir, and which up to this point is navigable for small craft.
