ALRESFORD, (Hampshire) 47 cm. and 60 mm. from London, in the road to Winchester, is an ancient bor. on a little r. called Alre by Camden, but Itching in the maps, and by the country people. 'Tis govern' d by a bailiff, and 8 burgesses. Its Mt. on Th. is chiefly for sheep. Its Fairs are on Holy-Thu, and June 24. On May day, 1610, this T. was burnt down by a fire, which broke out in several places, almost at the same time, and spared neither the Mt. house, nor Ch. before which disaster there was not one almsman in the p. It has been twice burnt since, but is handsomely rebuilt. Part of a Roman highway, that goes from this place to Alton, goes for the head to a great pond, or rather a little lake near this T. in which are abundance of awans. There's a neighbouring village, called Old Alresford.
