*ANDOVER, (Hampshire) 55 cm. 66 mm. from London, stands on the r. Ande, that comes out of the forest of Chute. It is said
to have had its first charter from K. John, but was incorporated last by Q. Eliz. and is governed by a bailiff, steward,
recorder, 10 approved men (out of whom are chose 2 justices) and 22 capital burgesses, who yearly choose the bailiff, and
he elects 2 serjeants at mace to attend him. Here was formerly a mon. and a chantry. 'Tis a large, handsome, populous T.
pleasantly situated on the edge of the Downs, and a great thoroughfare from London to Wiltshire, and from Newbury to
Salisbury. 'Tis a great T. for malting, and the mf. of shalloons and its Fairs are on Th. and F. the 3d week in Lt, May 1,
and Nov. 6. Mt. on S. Here is an hos. for 6 men, built and endowed by Mr. Pollen, a member for this bor. in several pts.
of K. Will. and father to the present member, who is one of the Welsh judges. Here are also a fr. s. founded An. 1569, and
a ch. s. for 30 boys; and the T. gives title of Visc. to the E. of Berkshire.
