ANSTY, (Hertfordshire) or ANESTY, not far from Barkway, stands on a steep hill, where a castle was erected in the R. of Will. the Conq. which was enlarged by the Barons, in their wars with K. John; but the lp. coming into the hands of Nich. de Anesty in the R. of Hen. III. the additional part of the castle was demolished by order of that Prince, (as the rest has been since by time) and the Ch. built soon after out of its ruins. The manor passed through divers hands, 'till at length it came to Sir Rowland Litton, who sold the advowson of the Ch. to Christ College, Cambridge, but settled the manor on his younger son Rowland.
