APPLEBY, (Westmorland) 197 cm. and 276 mm. from London, stands on the r. Eden, which almost encompasses it, and on that Roman military way, which crosses this Co. from Stainmore on the E. to Cumberland on the W. 'Tis the Shire T. and is governed by a mayor, ald. and C. C. Here is said to be the best corn Mt. in all these parts. Besides its Ch. and that at Bongate, which is a part of this T. here is a castle, which was the seat of the E. of Thanet, a gaol, a town-hall, a fr. s. and a hos. the latter founded and endowed by Lady Anne, daughter of George, Ld. Clifford in 1651, for a governess, and 12, other widows, commonly call'd The Mother and Twelve Sisters. This T. was taken by surprise by William, K. of Scots, but recovered by K. John, who gave its castle and barony to John de Vipont, whose family, and that of the Cliffords, have been Lds. of this C. for above 500 years. K. Hen. II. gave it priviledges equal to the city of York; and its charter was confirmed by his successors, even almost to the end of the last century. It was set on fire by the Scots, in the Rs. of Hen. II. and Rich. II. and in 1598 it suffered greatly by a pestilence, so that it is a shattering, decayed, half demolished T. The chief ornament of it is one broad street; and its principal strength consists in the castle, at the head of it, which is almost surrounded with the r. and with trenches, where the r. comes not. The Fairs here are on Whit- Monday, May 30, and June 10. Mt. on S.
