ARNOLD, (Nottinghamshire) or ARNALL, bet. Sherwood-Forest and Nottingham, on the E. side of Beskwood-Park, gave name to an ancient family, supposed to have held this manor under the crown; but K. John granted it to Hugh de Nevil, and his heirs, who held it 'till the R. of Edw. III. when it was transferred to Humphry Bohun, E. of Hereford, with whose daughter it passed to Thomas of Woodstock, D. of Gloucester, whose son passed with it to Sir William Foljamb, Knt. from whom it came by the Hastings and Beaumonts to the crown. After this, the township purchased the manor of K. James I. for the prefervation of their customs and commonage, it being within the forest of Sherwood; but the demesnes are in the family of Stanhope, related to the E. of Chesterfield. Q. Eliz. granted the right of that Ch. to John Flint, William Jenkinson, and their heirs.
