ASHBURNHAM, (Sussex) 9 m. from Hastings, and 51 m. from London, gives title of E. to the family of this name, which, though but lately admitted into the peerage, is as ancient as any in these parts, being descended from Bertram de Ashburnham, who was sheriff of Surry, Sussex, and Kent, at the arrival of Will. the Conq. and the present E. has a seat here, said to be one of the best in the Co. The loyalty of this family to K. Ch. I. is very well known. Bertram Ashburnham, Esq; who died in 1743, did by will bequeath to the clerk of this p. for ever, the watch, which that K. had in his pocket, and the shirt he wore at his execution, which are both deposited in the vestry of its Ch.
