ASHWELL, (Hertfordshire) near Caldicot, and the b. of Cambridgeshire, situate on the r. Rhee, that issues from a rock at
the S. end of the T. which being overshaddowed with tall ashes, seems to give name to it. In doomsday-book 'tis called a
bor. having 14 burgesses, and a Mt. and anciently it also had 4 Fairs. There is a quarry in Ashwell-Field, out of which
the stones of most of the neighbouring Chs. have been dug. Here was formerly a chantry, and now a ch. s.
