AXBRIDGE, (Somerset) 8 m. from Wells, 105 cm. and 130 mm. from London. It's a Bor. under Mendip-hills, near the Chedder- cliffs, so called from the r. Axe, by which it is water'd about 7 m. from its mouth. 'Tis a neat little T. and is governed by a mayor, bailiff, recorder, townclerk, &c. The mayor has 2 maces carried before him, one by a serjeant, and the other by a person appointed by the bailiff. It former sent members to Pt. and before the Ref. had a chantry. The charters, establishing its Corp. were granted by K. Hen. VIII. and Q. Eliz. and confirmed by K. James I. It has an Alm. endowed, and Fairs on Feb. 2, Mar 25, and June 11. Mt. on Th. Teazles, as they call the thistles used in the Woollen-Mf. are more cultivated here than in any other part of England.
