AXMOUTH, (Devon) on the coast bet. Lyme and Sidmouth, in the road from Exeter to Dorchester, now the seat of Sir John Colleton, Bt. has a large fair bay, which, in former times, was a good shelter for ships; but being given to the monks of Sion-abbey, it had been so neglected when K. Henry VIII. gave it to his servant, Walter Earl, Esq; whose posterity do now, or did very lately enjoy it, that it was quite spoiled, and all attempts made to recover it have proved in vain.
