AYNO on the Hill, (Northamptonshire) in the Angle of the Co. next to Oxf. near the r. Charwell. In the R. of Edward II. John de Clavering obtained a charter for a Mt. on Tu. and a Fair at Michaelmas; but both have been long disused. In the R. of Hen. IV. it was the estate of Reginald Ld. Cobham, and remained in his family till John Ld. Cobham gave his whose estate, after his decease, to K. Edw. III. The Hos. of St James or St. John, in this place, with all its estate, was given by John Fitz-Alan, Earl of Arundel, to Magdalen-college, Oxf. in the R. of Richard III. John Cartwright, Esq; of this Town (whose descendant, the late Thomas Cartwright, Esq; Kt. of the shire in thirteen successive Pts. had a seat here) gave 10 l a year, payable out of an estate at Bloxham in Oxfordsh. to the use of Brazen-nose-college, Oxf. for the subsistance of two scholars born in this shire, Chesh. and Oxf. but especially to be chosen from the publick grammar- school, which he founded in this T. or from Budworth or Wrenbury in Cheshire.
