BALEHALL, (Warwickshire) a little to the W. of Coventry, near the Queen's Park, bel. formerly to the Kts. Templars, who obtained a Mt. for it, and 2 yearly Fairs; and afterwards to the Kts.ofSt.TohnofJerufalem: While the Templars had it, the tenants of this manor could not marry their daughters without their consent. At the Ref. K. Hen. VIII. assigned it for the dowry of Q. Cath. and in the R. of Edw. VI. it was granted to the D. of Somerset, and his heirs; but upon his attainder, it was given to Dudley, E. of Warwick; who being also attainted in the next R. Q. Mary gave it to Edward, Ld. Dudley, and his heirs, but he surrendred it back to the crown: Q. Eliz. passed it to Robert Dudley, E. of Leicester, whose daughter, the Lady Catherine Levison, appointed a hos. to be created here, out of the revenues of this manor, for 20 poor widows of this, or the p. of Long Itchington, each of them to have 8 l. a year, and a gown of grey cloth; and 20 l. a year to a minister to read prayers every day in the hos. and teach 20 children.
