BARNARD'S CASTLE, (Durham) 185 cm. and 253 mm. from London, stands on the r. Tees, 15 m. from Richmond in Yorkshire, and takes its name from its builder, Barnard Baliol, great-grandfather to John Baliol, K. of Scots. In the R. of Q. Eliz. Sir George Bowes, and his brother, held it out eleven days, against the rebels under the Es. of Northumberland and Westmorland, who were forced to grant them an honourable capitulation. In the R. of Edw. IV. the D. of Gloster (afterwards Rich. III.) erected a college here for a dean and canons; and in the same R. a hos. was founded here for a master and 3 poor women. K. Will. III. advanced it to a Barony in the noble house of Vane. The T. consists chiefly of one handsome street, with lanes branching from it. The mfs. of it are stockings, bridles, and belts: and here is the best white-bread in all this country. Its Fair is on July 21. Mt. on W.
