BARTON upon Needwood, (Staffordshire) so called, by reason of its situation upon that forest near Whichnor, was granted by the Conq. to William de Somerville; and by him to Henry Ferrers, whose posterity were created first Es. Ferrers, and then of Darby; but it was forfeited to the crown, in the Barons wars with Hen. III. Dr. Tayler, master of the rolls to Hen. VIII. built a neat chapel here, in the form of Hen. the VIIth's at Westminster.
