BENTON MAGNA, (Northumberland) or Mickle-Benton, near Newcastle. Sir Philip Somerville of Staffordshire having had grants
from the crown, of several manors in this part of England, for his services to the Baliol family, gave the Church here
with certain lands in the parish to Baliol-college, Oxford, for the perpetual maintenance of 6 scholars, to be elected out
of this and the neighbouring Ts. Here was formerly a chantry.
