BIWELL, (Northumberland) was a barony and castle, held of K. Rich. I. by Hugh de Baliol, for the guard of Newcastle, near which it lies, as his ancestors had held it from the time that they were enfeoffed of the barony by William Rufus. In the R. of Rich. II. John Nevil, Ld. Raby, was possessed of it. Here was a fair castle in Mr. Camden's time; the site of which is now the seat of Sir John Fenwick: Below it is a most beautiful Weare in the Tyne for catching salmon; and in the middle of the r. stand two stone pillars, which formerly supported a bridge. The corn tythes are held by lease under the D. and Ch. of Durham. Here was formerly a chantry.
