The castle is the property and seat of the D. of Newcastle; to whose uncle, John Holles, D. of Newcastle, it came by the heirs female of the Cavendishes, Ds. of Newcastle, to which family it came from John Scot, the last E. of Chester, in the R. of Hen. III.
