BRANSPETH-CASTLE, (Durham) on the W. side of the Were, among the hills, a little to the S. W. of Durham, was built by the Bulmers, who resided here for some generations, till it passed, by marriage, to the Nevils, then to the Coles, and it is, or was lately, the seat of Sir H. Bellasyse. Here was formerly a chantry. In the r. a little below this place, are many huge stones, which are never covered but when it overflows, and what water is poured on them soon becomes brackish.
