BUNTINGFORD, (Hertfordshire) 28 cm. 32 mm. from London, is a small T. on the ford of the little r. Rib, and upon Ermine- street, in the post-road to Cambridge and the N. being a chapelry to Layston, though situated in that, and 3 other ps. and having a handsome chapel of brick, which was finished in 1626. Edw. III. granted it a Mt. in the highway on S. and Fair on the day and eve of St. Peter and Paul. The T. stands in the manor of Cornbury, which Hen. VIII. gave to Ld. Char. Audley, with a grant of a Mt. in the high-street every M. and two Fairs for two days each, viz. the day and morrow of St. Peter and St Paul, and the day and morrow of St. Andrew. Here is a handsome alms-ho. founded and endowed by Seth Ward, Bp, of Sarum, for four ancient men,and as many ancient women that had lived handsomely and were reduced by misfortune. And here is a sc. house, which was built in 1630, by the widow of Will. Freeman, Esq; of Aspedon-hall, who gave 7 l. a year to teach seven poor children. The said Bp. who was brought up at the fr. sc. here, gave moreover four scholarships of 12 l. a year to Christ's-college, Cambridge, to be enjoyed by four scholars, natives of Hertfordshire, that were educated at this sc. till they were masters of arts.
