BURTON UPON TRENT, (Staffordshire) 96 cm. and 123 mm. from London, was formerly noted for an abby, whose abbot being miter'd, sat in pt. and for its works of alabaster, but now chiefly for its fine ale. It had a castle which bel. to the Ferrars family; but its principal structure now is its bridge over the Trent into Derbyshire, which, except that of Westminster, is thought, by some, to be the finest in England. 'Tis all of squared free-stone, about 4 quarter of a m. in length, with 37 arches, through which the r. runs, and here divides into three channels. Here was not long ago, if there be not still, a profitable mf. of cloth. Barges come up to the T. by the help of art, with a full stream in a deep safe channel. In the out-woods near it used to be horse-races. Its Mt. is on Th. Fairs on Holy-Th. June 27, and Oct. 18.
