CAMBRAY, (Middlesex) or CANBURY-HOUSE, on the N.E. side of Islington, was built in the R. of Hen. VIII. by Bolton, prior of St. Bartholomew's in Smithfield, as appears by his device, viz. the bolt and tun cut in freestone in several parts of the garden walls. The house, which was for some time the residence of Q. Eliz. and K. Ja. I. is now divided into lodgings, which are chiefly occupied by citizens of London. The manor was given by Ralph de Berners in the R. of Hen. III. to the priory of St. Bartholomew. It was settled at the ref. upon Ld. Cromwel; upon whose attainder it was given to the E. of Warwick in the R. of Edw. VI. and upon his attainder the crown gave it to Sir John Spencer, Kt. from whom by his daughter it passed to William, late E. of Northampton.
