CARLETON, (Nottinghamshire) in the p. of Stoke-Bardolph, near Nottingham, descended from the Bardolphs family to Sir Will. Phelips, and from him to Visc. Beaumont; but was forfeited by the rebellion of his grandson, Francis Lovel, against K. Hen. VII. Yet K. Hen. VIII. granted it to his nephew, Hen. Norris, it being by him also forfeited by attainder, it was granted to Lady Anne Stanhope, great grandmother to the first Earl of Chesterfield, whose posterity did very lately, if they do not still, enjoy it. The Everinghams family had once a considerable share of this village.
