CARSHALTON, (Surrey) on the S. W. side of Croydon, near Bansted-Downs, lies among many springs, which, joining others from Croydon and Beddington, form a r. in the very street, called Wandel. The late Dr. Radcliff built a fine house here, which bel. to Sir John Fellows, subgovernor of the S. Sea company, who added gardens to it, with fine waterworks, but was purchased by Ld. Hardwick, Ld. H. Chancellor, who sold it to the late Will. Mitchel, of Huntingdon, Esq; whose family now possess it. Mr. Scawen lately began a magnificent seat here, where, besides a cascade, is an orangery, and a grotto, thought inferior to none in England.
