CASHIOBURY, (Hertfordshire) in the p. of Watford, 16 m. N. of London, is said to have been the seat of the Mercian Ks. in the Saxon heptarchy, till K. Offa gave it to the Mon. of St. Alban's; but, at the Ref. K. Hen. VIII. convey'd it to Rich. Morrison, Esq; who began to build a noble house here; but being forced to fly from the persecution of Q. Mary, left it to his son (afterwards Sir Charles) to finish it; from whose son, of the same name, it pass'd, by his only daughter, in marriage, to Arthur Ld. Capel, Baron of Hadham; from whom it came, by inheritance, to be the manor of the Earls of Essex, who have a beautiful seat here, built in form of an H, within a large park, through which runs a trout-stream. On the N. and E. sides of the house are large wood walks, that were planted by Le Notre in the R. of Cha. II. but the chief walks are planted with lime-trees.
