CASTLECOMB, (Wiltshire) between Chippenham, and Badminton in Gloucestershire, is said to have formerly had a Mt. on M. which has been long disused, and a Fair on the 22d, 23d and 24th of April, which is still continued. It was once called Comb only, but one of the Dunstanvills, its ancient Lds, having made his mansionhouse a castle, it was called Castlecomb, to distinguish it from Comb-Basset. It was afterwards sold to Barth. Ld. Badlesmere, upon whose execution for rebellion, it was seized by K. Edw, II. and given to one of the Spensers, his favourites; but was soon after restored to his family by Edw. III. and, by marriage, came to John Tibetot, who accompanied that King in his wars in Flanders and France. In Camden's time it bel. to ths Scroops. The Roman fosse-way goes through this place, from Ebdown towards Slaughterford.
