CASTOR, (Northamptonshire) 3 m. from Peterborough, and 1 from the r. Nyne, is supposed, from the chequered pavements found here, together with Roman copper coins, urns, &c. to have been part of the ancient city called by the Romans Durobrivae, and by the Saxons Dormanchester. The Roman highway, called Erming-street, goes from hence to Lincolnshire. Its Ch. which appears to have been consecrated in 1174, stands on a hill where the castle stood, which was the seat of the Roman governor. The manor bel. to the D. and C. of Peterborough; and near it is the seat of the Ld. Fitzwilliams.
