CHELMSFORD, (Essex) 25 cm. 28 mm. from London, has a bridge over the Chelmer, which, at the T's. end, joins the Cann. 'Tis a pretty large populous T. almost in the centre of the Co. and is a great thoroughfare, with good inns, in the road to London. The Co. sessions and courts are held, and Kts. of the shire elected here. Here is a good Mt. on Fr. and Fairs May 1, July 7, and Nov. 1. Its Mts. and Fairs were granted by K. Stephen and K. John. Here is a fr. sc. which was founded and liberally endowed by K. Edw. VI. who settled the Gt. of it in the families of Sir Hen. Tyrrel, Sir Will. Petre, Sir Walter Mildmay, and Tho. Mildmay, Esq; and here is a ch. sc. for 45 boys and 25 girls. The Ch. appears to have been rebuilt above 300 years. This place was formerly held of the Bp. of London, and the manor-house is still called Bishop's-Hall, but Bp. Bonner alienated it to the crown. The chief support of this place, besides the business of the Co. is the multitude of carriers and passengers constantly passing this way to London, with droves of cattle, provisions, and mfs. All round it are many seats of the nobility and gentry. In the 15th century Malcolm K. of Scotland erected a mon. here.
