COBHAM-HALL, (Kent) on the W. side of Rochester, was the ancient seat and manor of the Cobhams; whose family expiring in an heiress, she carried the estate, with the title of Ld. Cobham, to the family of Brook of Devonshire; one of whom obtained a grant of a Mt. and Fair here, both now disused; but Henry, Ld. Brook, forfeiting it to the crown by treason against Hen. VI. the manor was granted, with other parts of his estate, to Lodowick, D. of Lenor. It had a college in the times of popery; and, as it formerly gave title of Baron to Sir John Oldcastle, it since gave titles of Baron and Visc. to the late Sir W. Temple; and was the seat of the Baroness Clifton, as it is now of Earl Darnley; it being a handsome brick house, built by Inigo Jones, and noted for the excellent marble chimney-pieces in most of the rooms.
