COSSAL, (Nottinghamshire) or COTTESHALE, near the r. Erwash, to the S. of Greyfly-Castle, bel. formerly in great part to a family of the same name; which afterwards passed, by marriage, to the Willoughbys, one of whom obtained a charter of free- warren for it, in the R. of Edw. III. as did the other part from the Peverels to the Shevingtons: but the manor was vested in the mon. of Newstede; after the Diss. of which, Willoughby's part was granted to Percival Bowes and John Maysier; yet the Willoughbys continued to have a seat here, and some estate.
