DILSTON, (Northumberland) on the S. side of the Tyne, where a little brook runs into it a m. from Hexham, is in old records called Devilston. The late E. of Derwentwater, who built a fine house here, had his title of Baron from hence, his father, Sir Francis, having been created Baron of Dilston, Visc. Ratcliff, and E. of Derwentwater in Cumberland, by K. Jam. II. but the son forfeited all those titles, by his rebellion against K. Geo. I. in 1715; for which he also lost his head.
