EASTWICK, (Hertfordshire) on the r. Stour, 1 m. from Goldeston, in the road from thence to London. In the time of William the Conq. it bel. to Geoffery de Beche. Being afterwards in the crown, K. Hen. III. gave it to Rich. Thaney, the sheriff of Essex and Hertford; one of whose descendants, in the R. of Edw. I. obtained a Mt. here on T. and a Fair on the eve-day and morrow of St Botolph, both since disused. In the R. of Rich. II. it was in the possession of Will. Doreward; but afterwards sold to Ralph Hull, who conveyed it to Roger Spice and his heirs; from whom it passed to Sir John Oldhall. It afterwards came to the crown, and Rich. III. by way of exchange, granted it, with the manor of Hunsdon, to Sir Will. Stanley. It again reverted to the crown, and, in the R. of Philip and Mary, was annexed, with others, to the duchy of Lancaster. Q. Eliz. granted it to Hen. Cary, from whom it passed to Hen. Cary Earl of Dover, in whose family it continued till 1641, when it was sold to Sir John Gore of Gilston, from whom it came to his son Sir Hum. Gore.
