EFFINGHAM, (Surrey) bet. W. Horsley and the Cookhams, in the road from Leatherhead to Guildford. There is a tradition, that it was once a large place, and had 16 Chs. tho' now a small village. The manor bel. heretofore to the Staffords Ds. of Buckingham; but in the R. of Hen. VIII. was vested in the crown, and by that K. granted, in fee, to the Ld. Berners; who dying without any legitimate male-issue, it went by marriage to Edmund Knyvet; after this, it passed to the D. of Norfolk's son, William, whom Q. Mary I. created Ld. Howard of Effingham.
