ELHAM, (Kent) on the lesser Stour, bet. Wye and Hythe, 58 cm. 62 mm. from London. The prince, afterwards K. Edw. I. having obtained a Mt. and Fair for it, sold it to Boniface of Savoy, Abp. of Canterbury, who conveyed it to the Leybourns; by an heiress of which family it passed to John de Hastings and Will. de Clinton E. of Huntings; but, for want of issue, it escheated to the crown, when Rich. II. granted it to Simon de Burleigh, Ld. warden of the Cinque-Ports; and, on his forfeiture of it soon after by treason, he granted it to the canons of St. Stephen's at Westminster; but, at the Diss. K. Edw.VI. granted it, in lease for 80 years, to Sir Edw. Wotton; whose son made over the remainder of the lease to Alex. Hamon, whose coheir carried it, by marriage, to Sir Rob. Lewknor; but the fee-simple was purchased of the crown by Sir Cha. Herbert, master of the revels in the R. of Cha. I. and he, not long after, resigned his interest to Mr. Alft, a Dutch merchant at London. The Mt. is M. Fairs the M. before Easter, Easter-M. Whit-M. and Oct. 9.
