EWELME, (Oxfordshire) vulgo NEWELME, on the S. side of Britwell, was so called from its elm-trees. It formerly bel. to the De la Poles, Ds. of Suffolk; one of whom built a seat here, with a neat Ch. and a hos. but the estate being confiscated by one of his successors, in the R. of Hen. VII. for high-treason, K. Hen. VIII. added some adjacent manors to it, and made an honour of them. In the year 1720, an urn was discovered on the common here, near the old Roman way, called Ikenild- Street, that had copper-coins, some as ancient as the arrival of Julius Caesar in England.
