FORELAND-NORTH, (Kent) in the Isle of Thanet, of which 'tis the N. E. point, is the promontory by act of Pt. ascertained to be the most southern part of the port of London, which is thereby extended N. in a right line to the point called the Nase, on the coast of Essex, and forms that properly called the Mouth of the Thames. A sea-mark was lately created here by the Trinity-House corp. at the publick expence, which is a round brick-tower, near 80 feet high. The sea gains so much upon the land here, by the winds at S. W. that within the memory of some that are living, above 30 acres of land have been lost in one place. All vessels that pass on the S. side of this head-land are said to enter the Channel, which is the name for the narrow sea bet. England and France; and all the Ts. or harbours bet. London and this place, whether on the Kentish or Essex shore, are called members of the port of London.
