GALTRES-FOREST, (Yorkshire, N.R.) on the S. side of Gilling-Castle, extended formerly to the very walls of York city, and
was famous for an annual horse-race, where the prize for the winning horse was a little golden bell. Mr. Camden says,
these races were frequented by such numbers of people from all parts, and that such great wagers were laid on the racers,
as was incredible.
