*GRANTHAM, (Lincolnshire) 85 cm. 104 mm. from London, is a neat populous T, with abundance of very good inns of great resort, on the N. road, and the r. Witham. It is supposed to have been a Roman T. by the remains of a castle which have been formerly dug up here; and before the Ref. had many religious-houses, of some of which the ruins are still to be seen. It is governed by an ald. and 12 justices of the peace, a recorder, a coroner, an escheator, 12 second-twelve men, who are of the C. C. and 12 constables to attend the court, and is esteemed rich. Here is a fine large Ch. with a stone spire, one of the loftiest in England, being 280 foot high, which, by the deception of the sight, seems to stand awry. Here is a good fr. sc. built and endowed by Rich. Fox Bp. of Winchester, a native of this place, where Sir Isaac Newton received his first education, besides 2 ch. scs. It gives title of Earl to Henry d'Auverquerque, so created by K. Will. III. The Mt. here is on S. Fairs the first M. in Lent, Holy-Th. St. Peter's-day, Sept. 6, and October 15. On the neighbouring course are frequent horse-races.
