*GRINSTED-EAST, (Sussex) 25 cm. 29 mm. from London, came, after the R. of Edward III. to the noble family of the Sackvilles, ancestors to the D. of Dorset, who had great estates in this Co. and one of them, viz. Rob. Earl of Dorset, built hos. in the R. of K. James I. for 31 poor people of this T. and endowed it with 330 l. a year. 'Tis a Bor. by prescription, governed by a bailiff and his brethren, has sent burgesses to Pt. ever since the 1st of Edw. II. who are elected by about 35 burgageholders; had a charter for a monthly Mt. from Hen. VII. and is generally the place for the assizes. The returning-officer here is the bailiff, who is chose by a jury of burgageholders, at the D. of Dorset's court- leet. Its Mt. is on Th. and its Fairs, which are well frequented, are April 16, July 2, Sept. 25, and Nov. 30, which last is a great one for Welsh runts, that are bought up here by the Kentish and Sussex farmers, and for fat hogs and other cattle.
